So yesterday I had the opportunity to speak with one of the head staff at AANE (The Aspergers/Autism Network) which is located right here in Watertown. I told her my entire story from my diagnosis, to transitioning back to public school, to college, to the long and stressful aftermath including my relationship. She heard me out and was very moved by my realization over a week ago leading me to take full drive and initiative holding nothing back. To quote the late great Notorious BIG, "Bein' broke at 30 gave a n**** the chills". Loosely speaking, because I'm pushing 30, but being broke is only one future concern. It's a lot deeper.
Anyway, I asked her for further info about the programs they had which I already registered for. Then I told her my career choices I've been pushing toward since last November. I told her about my joining a Meetup group called Fringe Aspies which fits my description to a tee. And then, last but not least, I told her about my aspiration to be a speaker for people of my age and school background (basically millennials who suffered through poor school systems designed for Aspies that used abusive methods due to lack of research at the time). I told her the main reason is to let younger kids (in the still overwhelmingly high like-minded school systems) feel empowered, to not let their circumstances discourage them from using the resources they are allowed to have to their advantage and follow their dreams. No child at any spot on the spectrum should let daily discouragement and lack of empathy from neurotypicals bring them down to the point of losing control. I am always enraged at these still very widespread assumptions that many bullied, awkward or even quiet Aspies are future school shooters or causes of other horrific and tragic events. Three years ago, in one of my weekly seminars with the Aspire internship program, one of my peers, an Aspie himself, was saying with no remorse that Hitler had Aspergers. I don't like to say this right here but that statement had me shook.
So the staff member gave me the email for the coordinator of the AANE Speakers Bureau. It's where young adults to seniors on the spectrum speak publicly at various schools and related establishments and share their experiences. I emailed this person right away. She asked me to email her my resume, which I did. She is scheduled to call me at some point today. While I am curious to see what she wants to talk about and ask me, I am really hoping she can give me a chance. Anyone that knows me personally knows just like I know, that I would be beyond a great asset to them.
An everyman blog to spread awareness to individuals who feel isolated, depressed or struggle in a neurotypical society. Written through the experience of yours truly.
